Back in early April, my friend Annaliese and I went to visit our friend Amelia in Durham. The three of us went to high school together – we were all new students at Hong Kong International School the same year, so we bonded over “where the heck are we?” and other expat things! Now, Annaliese lives in Richmond and Amelia lives in Durham.
We roadtripped down, which was a surprisingly short drive. We of course made a requisite stop at Chick Fil A for dinner, and then made it to Durham/Chapel Hill!
On Saturday, Amelia took us all around the Triangle area – Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. I made an absurd request to visit every college/university in the area, and we visited so many of them. It was amazing.
While we were at Duke, we stopped by Duke Gardens, which was SO beautiful. Definitely check it out if you are in the area!
We went out to eat, too, and spent a lot of time catching up. There are some awesome restaurants in Chapel Hill, where we ate most!
One of the reasons we went to visit (other than wanting to see Amelia, obviously!) was to run the Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon! I didn’t train well for the race, so I dropped down to the 5k, which was Amelia’s FIRST race EVER! I was so honored to be able to run her first race with her! Annaliese ran the half marathon and rocked it! We had such a great time.
The course was pretty weird, and not very scenic – it was on pretty bland roads near a stadium, through a cookie-cutter neighborhood, and through some parking lots. Not the best. BUT, it was fun anyway! I loved running with Amelia, and we got to cheer on Annaliese at the end of her race.
What a fun weekend. I can’t wait to go back to Durham again, especially since it is so close!
